Eric Greitens, Winner of the 2014 Gleitsman Citizen Activist Award

Congratulations to this year's Gleitsman Citizen Activist Award winner, Eric Greitens. A decorated veteran, accomplished scholar, and longtime humanitarian, Greitens donated his combat pay to found The Mission Continues, a national nonprofit organization that empowers veterans to serve in communities across America.

The late Alan Gleitsman described the intent of the award as: “… recognizing people who make a difference, tell their story, and make other people aware of what one person can do.” Recipients of the award have been critical thinkers and problem solvers of the highest order.

Eric's vision is nothing short of a paradigm shift in how the country views the concept of service and veterans. Rather than placing veterans in the often-assigned societal role of “problem” or “burden,” Eric recognizes that these men and women are in fact critical national assets; that soldiers returning from combat should understand that they are still needed. Through his open and humble approach to the work of developing leaders, Eric challenges them to rethink the next phase of their lives. He helps them identify ways in which they can utilize their military training and leadership skills in a new context. Since its founding in 2007, over 3,000 veterans have been directly engaged through The Mission Continues, transforming their lives through meaningful action in their hometowns and communities.
